5 Natural Remedies for Itchy Paws

If your dog can't stop licking, chewing, or scratching at their paws, you're not alone. Itchy paws are one of the most common complaints veterinarians hear—and while there are plenty of medicated creams available, many pet parents are turning to natural remedies first.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar Soak

What You'll Need:

  • 1/2 cup raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (with "the mother")
  • 2 cups warm water

Why it works: Apple cider vinegar has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties. It helps restore the skin's pH balance.

How to use it: Mix the ACV with warm water. Have your dog stand in the solution for 5 minutes. Pat dry thoroughly. Repeat daily for 3-5 days.

⚠️ Important: Never use ACV on open wounds or raw skin—it will sting!

2. Oatmeal Paste Treatment

What You'll Need:

  • 1 cup colloidal oatmeal (or regular oats ground into fine powder)
  • Warm water

Why it works: Oatmeal contains compounds that reduce inflammation and soothe irritated skin.

How to use it: Mix oatmeal with warm water to create a thick paste. Apply to paws, let sit for 10 minutes, then rinse.

3. Coconut Oil Massage

Warm a small amount of coconut oil between your palms and massage into your dog's paw pads. Apply before bedtime so it has time to absorb.

4. Epsom Salt Foot Soak

Dissolve 1/2 cup Epsom salt in warm water. Soak paws for 10 minutes. This draws out irritants and reduces swelling.

5. Chamomile Tea Rinse

Steep 2-3 chamomile tea bags in boiling water for 10 minutes. Let cool completely. Pour over paws or use as a compress for 5 minutes.

When to See a Vet

Contact your veterinarian if symptoms persist beyond 5-7 days, or if you notice bleeding, pus, or your dog is limping.
