How to Compost Pet Waste (Yes, Really)

The average dog produces about 275 pounds of poop per year. Multiply that by the 90+ million dogs in the United States, and you're looking at millions of tons of waste—most of it wrapped in plastic bags.

⚠️ The Golden Rule: Never compost pet waste in your regular vegetable garden compost. Pet waste compost should only be used for ornamental plants, trees, and non-edible landscaping.

Why Compost Pet Waste?

Method 1: The DIY Enzyme System (Easiest)

You'll need: A 5-gallon bucket with lid, 1 cup brown sugar, 4 cups water, 1 tsp yeast.

Mix and add waste directly to the bucket. The sugar feeds beneficial bacteria that break down waste. Dilute the liquid (1:10 ratio) for use around trees.

Method 2: Dedicated Pet Waste Composter

DIY Instructions

  1. Buy a 30+ gallon garbage can with lid
  2. Drill 15-20 holes in sides and bottom
  3. Cut out the bottom entirely
  4. Dig hole 2 feet deep, away from food gardens
  5. Place can in hole, add septic starter
  6. Start adding waste!

What About Cat Waste?

Requires extra caution due to toxoplasmosis. Use only biodegradable litter and never use compost near food crops.
